Thoughts on bell hooks

Why does hooks use popular culture to carry her message? Because it is an effective medium due to its familiarity. It allows her to make people have a second look at the things they think they recognize and are familiar with. It is a rather postmodernist approach, taking two dissimilar qualities and ideas and juxtaposing them to illustrate a point. Her point about the concerted effort to regress the feminist movement through careful use of movie images and like media was intriguing (I'll never see Leaving Last Vegas in the same light again).
